At the end of July 2018, Manulife announced that “it [would] launch this fall the first medical marijuana program in Canada, in collaboration with Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation,” and that “the program [would] be available as an option for participating Group Benefits plans and individual health insurance plans in Canada.”

Sun Life similarly announced in February 2018 that starting March 1, 2018, medical cannabis could be added as optional coverage under an Extended Health Care (EHC) benefit on both SunSolutions and SunAdvantage at the request of a plan sponsor. Since then, the company has continued to engage with plan sponsors on the topic, most recently releasing a “Bright Paper” entitled “Medical Cannabis and Group Benefits Plan Coverage.”

Competiscan developed a presentation complete with marketing communications discussing this topic.
